The hot tub and cedar barrel sauna run all winter, with the fire pit and the valley below the deck. The hot tub and sauna each hold up to four at a time, so plan a rotation. Chestnut Mountain, Galena's ski hill, is nearby for New Year's Day.

Galena is a 19th-century river town in the far northwest corner of Illinois, where Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin meet. Its brick Main Street is lined with independent shops, restaurants and tasting rooms, and it is the hometown of Ulysses S. Grant.
The hills around it are the surprise. The Galena Territory is a wooded community of private homes around Lake Galena, with trails and big valley views. Tower House sits on a hillside there, about 12 minutes from downtown.
